Schaible Geophysical Institute Fellowships application period now open

The application period for two new Schaible Geophysical Institute Fellowships at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute is now open.

The fellowships are for prospective Ph.D. students who are interested in working in any one of the Geophysical Institute’s research areas: atmospheric sciences; remote sensing; seismology and geodesy; snow, ice and permafrost; space physics and aeronomy; tectonics and sedimentation; and volcanology.

Deadline for application submission is Jan. 15, 2024. The two new fellowships will start at the beginning of the fall 2024 semester.

The fellowship description and application form is available here.

Grace Berg Schaible, a former Alaska attorney general and one of the University of Alaska’s greatest benefactors, established the fellowship for graduate students whose principal course of study is in subjects taught or researched at the Geophysical Institute.

Schaible died in 2017. Her estate gave the fellowship endowment a $2.2 million gift, providing enough of a financial base so that planning for the awarding of fellowships could begin.

Three students have been awarded a Schaible Geophysical Institute Fellowship since the program began.
